Sistah Vegan, Where Do You Get Your DHA?

People tell me they eat fish because that is a good way to get DHA, which is crucial for eye and brain health. Wild Alaskan Salmon is touted as a ‘food’ for human beings to get optimal brain-building DHA. Did you know that Salmon get DHA into their systems through algae and you can too! You don’t need to eat animals to get DHA.

Me and my kids have been taking Deva line of DHA for years now. I took it during all my pregnancies as well. It’s also great for kids to have DHA in their diets because of course, they are growing those wonderful brains. Also, children with higher level of DHA in their diets have lower rates of ADD. 1. I’m an expat living in Korea and since living here, I eat a lot of seaweed and my baby loves it too. In fact, Korean pregnant women consume a lot of seaweed soup (which often has beef though), but you can make it yourself without meat or request it vegan in restaurants (it is made fresh to order). Also after giving birth, you are fed a huge bowl of this every single day in the hospital for breakfast, lunch and dinner after giving birth. And Korean women do so for at least a month post-delivery. After eating it while pregnant for nutrients and being fed it in the hospital, I actually started craving it even when I got home. Now it is just staple in our diet. Here it is promoted as a good source of iron and as being good for breastfeeding mothers.
